"For the next generation, it is our responsibility to remain on the divine path as shown by [the] intensity of [his] practice and depth of understanding of yoga.”
— Geeta Iyengar, Pune 2014 Convention
Although our precious Guruji is no longer with us, his gift of yoga lives in all who follow his extraordinary teachings. As urged by the Iyengar family, our 2016 Iyengar Convention will focus on practice. In many writings and teachings, Guruji’s message has been to practice from the periphery to the core and then back again. Our teacher and guide for the convention classes is Abhijata Sridhar, the granddaughter of BKS Iyengar — the next generation.
The schedule includes plenty of additional time to enjoy the five-star resort, visit the convention store and archives exhibit, as well as share community with yoga friends and colleagues. Please note the schedule is subject to change.
Abhijata Sridhar is a senior teacher at Ramanani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India. As a young woman of 16, she had the good fortune of beginning her yoga studies under the guidance of her maternal grandfather, the world renowned yogacharya, BKS Iyengar, her aunt, Geeta S. Iyengar, and her uncle, Prashant Iyengar.
Abhijata earned a master’s degree in bioformatics from the University of Pune before making a decision to devote herself to the fulltime study and teaching of yoga at RIMYI. Once she did, it was evident to anyone studying at the Institute that BKS Iyengar and his granddaughter were devoted to one another and to the practice they shared.
Abhijata travelled with her grandfather, BKS Iyengar to Russia and China as well as accompanying her aunt Geeta S. Iyengar to international yoga conventions in the UK, Australia, Germany, the USA, and China. She has also taught independently at yoga conventions in France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, the UK, and Israel.
IYNAUS is honored to host Geetaji and Abhijata together at our May, 2016 convention. Our yoga community looks forward to becoming acquainted with this inspiring young teacher who is wholeheartedly committed to carrying on her grandfather’s legacy.
The BKS Iyengar Yoga National Association of the U.S (IYNAUS), a not-for-profit organization, disseminates and promotes the art, science and philosophy of yoga according to the teachings of BKS Iyengar. To this mission we invite all students of yoga to participate in this unique opportunity to study with the grandaughter of our renowned teacher.
Those who have health conditions and already have a personal practice that incorporates ways to work with the issue are welcome to join the classes. If you have a condition that needs to be addressed, it is advised that you seek counsel with certified Iyengar teachers to guide you in your practice.
A limited number of scholarships — to offset some or all of event admission fees — are available. These scholarships are intended for current members of IYNAUS in good standing, dedicated to the practice of Iyengar Yoga, who demonstrate financial need. Scholarships do NOT include lodging, travel, or merchandise expenses. Deadline for scholarship applications is February 1, 2016. Online application available here.
